The Pierra Menta Course

Created in 1986

The Pierra Menta is an international ski mountaineering competition held every March since 1986 in France, at Arêches-Beaufort in Savoie, in the heart of the Beaufort region, on the slopes of the Grand-Mont.

Over four days, the event covers a total of 10,000 metres of positive elevation gain, set among beautiful snow-covered ridges and a succession of gruelling climbs - fifteen peaks ranging from 2,000 to 2,687 metres - and dizzying descents. Thousands of spectators climb the mountain at dawn, cheering on the top athletes with their bells, accordions and trumpets all the way to the Grand-Mont ledge.

The Beaufortain Dairy Cooperative

Created in 1957- Opened in 1961

In the 1960s, Beaufort cheese production was at its lowest ebb. Industrialisation and urbanisation triggered a rural exodus, isolating producers and leading to an agricultural crisis that called into question the old system.

This phenomenon led farmers to react by adopting a new organisation: pooling resources and exploiting the fruit of their labour, Beaufort cheese, to turn it into a product with high added value, quality and tradition.

With this in mind, a group of farmers set about creating the Beaufortain dairy cooperative in 1957. After a difficult start, it opened its doors in 1961. The following year, the Arêches cheese dairy stopped operating and its members joined the new Cooperative.

Over the years, the Beaufortain dairy cooperative has won the confidence of almost all the milk producers in the Beaufort region. It has constantly endeavoured to expand, modernise and make day-to-day tasks easier: development and construction of production facilities, maturing cellars and a laboratory, mechanisation, computerisation, and so on. The desire to combine traditional know-how with new technologies is permanent. Winning the Beaufort Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC = Protected Designation of Origin) in 1968 testifies to the success of the cooperative project.

In 1972, the Cooperative opened its doors to the public, followed by the development of direct sales, which contributed to its success and to the reputation of Beaufort cheese.

With the support of INRA (Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique = French national body for agronomic research), the Beaufortain dairy cooperative was a major player in the introduction of the first mobile milking machine. This innovation made it possible to maintain and then redevelop milk production in mountain pastures.
